AVID

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a research-proven, college-readiness system designed to increase the number of students who enroll and persist in four-year colleges or universities. Although AVID Secondary serves all students school-wide, it focuses on students in the academic middle who enroll in the AVID Elective course in grades 6 through 12. AVID Elective and core teachers, counselors, principals, college tutors, and parents raise expectations of students and, with the AVID support system in place, students will rise to the challenge. In 2016-2017, there were more than 6,200 AVID secondary, elementary, and higher education AVID implementation sites throughout the United States. In Virginia Beach City Public Schools, AVID secondary supported over 2,000 students at 10 middle schools and 9 high schools.

AVID secondary students are middle and high school students who have:

• at least average to above-average grades (2.0-3.5 GPA) and test scores;
• good citizenship and attendance records;
• the determination to improve their writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading skills to succeed academically; and
• the drive to graduate from high school and successfully transition to college.

• Enroll and achieve in rigorous, college-preparatory classes and the AVID elective course;
• Maintain a one-notebook organization system, which includes notes for all courses, assignment logs, and tutorial work;
• Maintain satisfactory citizenship and attendance in all classes;
• Participate in AVID tutorials, a group inquiry process to solve problems from students’ core classes;
• Take the PSAT/SAT/ACT college entrance exams one or multiple times;
• Research and submit applications for college admission, scholarships, and financial assistance for college in high school;
• Participate in AVID events, field experiences, college tours, and community service projects; and
• Graduate from high school on time and be prepared to enter a four-year college
